Magnolia tree trimming in Little Rock, done without butchering

Southern magnolias are some of the most loved trees in Arkansas yards, and some of the most badly pruned. They grow big, keep their leaves all year, and do not forgive heavy cuts, so the trimming has to be light and well placed.

Short answer

Magnolia tree trimming in Little Rock typically runs about $415 to $506 per visit, going by published 2026 figures, with large magnolias costing more. The work is usually raising low limbs, clearing branches off the house, roof and drive, and removing deadwood, done lightly so the tree keeps its natural shape and does not respond with a burst of weak sprouts.

What magnolia trimming should and should not be

Magnolia Tree Trimming in Little Rock, AR

Magnolias naturally keep their lower limbs to the ground, which many people love and many others want raised for mowing, parking or a view of the house. Either is fine; the key is making cuts back to the trunk or a side branch, never shearing.

Heavy cutting or topping leaves a magnolia with bare stubs and a mass of fast, weak sprouts. Light work every few years keeps the tree healthy and looking like a magnolia.

Raising low magnolia limbs

Low limbs are removed back to the trunk, a few at a time, until there is clearance for mowing, walking or parking. On large magnolias we raise gradually over more than one visit rather than stripping the lower trunk all at once, which keeps the tree balanced and avoids exposing bark that has always been shaded. The leaves and seed cones that fall under a raised magnolia are also much easier to rake. Some owners prefer to keep the low skirt of branches as a screen, and that is fine too.

Local market guidance: $415 to $506 per typical visit (planning range from published 2026 figures, not our quote; every job is priced on site).

Clearing magnolias off houses

Magnolia branches resting on roofs and siding scrape shingles and hold moisture against the walls. We take those limbs back to side branches well clear of the house, so the tree grows away from it rather than straight back. Branches that reach toward gutters are shortened too, since the large, leathery leaves pack gutters solid. Clearing a few feet of space between the tree and the house also lets the siding dry after rain, which slows mildew and paint failure on that side. We make the cuts in the dormant months or right after flowering when possible.

Shaping without butchering

If a magnolia has outgrown its spot, the answer is selective reduction: shortening the longest limbs back to side branches pointing in a better direction. It takes longer than shearing, but it keeps the tree's form. If a magnolia has been topped in the past, we can begin restoring it by selecting the strongest sprouts and removing the rest over a few seasons. It is slow work, but a restored magnolia can look natural again in a few years.

How this job runs around Little Rock

Southern magnolias line older streets and front yards across Little Rock, from the historic houses near downtown and in Hillcrest out into the suburbs, and they are just as common in Texarkana's older neighborhoods. Their size and their evergreen leaves make them stand out in winter, and the same qualities make them hard to trim well. Many of the biggest ones we see were planted when the houses were new and now reach past the roofline.

How long magnolia trimming takes

Raising and clearing an average magnolia is usually a few hours. Very large trees, or several trees, can take most of a day.

Restoring a magnolia that was topped is a project over two or three seasons, a lighter visit each time.
