Short answer

Sweetgum tree removal in Little Rock typically costs about $506 to $690 for an ordinary tree, going by published 2026 figures, more for large sweetgums over houses. The work is a standard sectional removal, followed by grinding the stump below grade, because sweetgums sprout readily from their roots and stumps if they are left in the ground.

Why people remove sweetgums

Sweetgum Tree Removal in Little Rock, AR

The gumballs are the usual reason: hard, spiky seed balls that drop from fall through spring, make lawns hard to walk on and turn ankles. Sweetgums also grow tall quickly, with wide crowns that shade out lawns and gardens.

A healthy sweetgum is a sound tree, so removal is a choice rather than a necessity. We tell you honestly whether the tree is a risk or simply a nuisance, and if you keep it, how to make it easier to live with.

Gumball trees over patios and pools

A sweetgum over a patio, deck or pool makes every surface a cleanup job, and the gumballs clog skimmers and gutters through the winter. Removing a tree in that spot means lowering every piece over hard surfaces, so we rope limbs down rather than dropping them, lay mats where needed, and clear the gumballs that fall during the work. If the tree is the only shade in the yard, we can talk about a replacement that drops nothing worse than leaves. Sweetgum wood is not prized for firewood, so most of it is chipped or hauled unless you want rounds left.

Local market guidance: $506 to $690 for a typical removal; large trees over 60 feet or hard-access trees run about $1,000 to $1,200 (planning range from published 2026 figures, not our quote; every job is priced on site).

Sweetgums crowding the yard

Sweetgums seed themselves along fences and into beds, and a few volunteers can become a grove that shades out the lawn. Taking out the crowded ones and keeping the best tree often gives the right balance of shade and light. We remove the extras, grind their stumps, and leave the keeper with a clean crown and enough room to grow. Thinning a crowded group also lets more light reach the lawn, which often recovers within a season. Volunteer seedlings caught early can simply be pulled, which saves a removal later.

Sweetgum root sprouts

Sweetgums send up sprouts from their roots and stumps, especially after the main tree is cut. A stump left at ground level can produce a thicket of suckers within a season. Grinding the stump below grade removes most of that sprouting tissue, and any root sprouts that appear afterward can be cut back a few times until they give up. Mowing over young sprouts in the lawn usually keeps them down. We note where sprouts are likely so you know what to watch for in the first spring after the removal.

How this job runs around Little Rock

Sweetgums are one of the most common yard trees across the Little Rock metro, and they show up on a large share of our removal calls. Tree companies here typically work from Little Rock and North Little Rock out to suburbs like Sherwood, Bryant and Cabot, and in every one of those towns there are lots where a single volunteer sweetgum became the biggest tree in the yard, dropping gumballs on every surface below it.
